Last month, we were honored to attend and sponsor the CBRE Americas Summit in Denver, where we had the chance to connect and engage with many of you. One of the most memorable highlights from the event for us was The Conversation with world-renowned restaurateur and entrepreneur, Danny Meyer, who was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people this year.
We were skeptical at first thinking about how someone from the world of restaurants would have anything of relevance to share with the real estate industry. Was this going to be a cooking demonstration? Danny did share a recipe, of course; one that can cook up success in just about any business – including ours.
Danny’s recipe for business success has two main ingredients. The first is technical prowess – how well do you do your job? How qualified are you to do it? These days, as Danny explained, technical prowess is table stakes. Simply being the best when it comes to technical prowess, however, isn’t enough anymore for most businesses.
This is where the second ingredient comes in. This second ingredient, Danny emphasized, is “the power of hospitality.” In other words, how do you make people feel in the course of doing your job? How well do you connect with them and understand the emotions at play in their world? Danny believes that, for any business, the ultimate balance is 49% technical and 51% hospitality.
In our world, hospitality means creating a truly customized, client-focused experience that understands how big of a role emotion plays in almost every decision and project. The power of hospitality is where all businesses, not just restaurants, stand out and differentiate themselves. And it’s certainly how we strive to do things here at Pure with our Build To Suit You approach.
If you haven’t read it yet, Danny’s book, “Setting the Table,” is a must-read for anyone in business, and a great overview of how he values emotional mastery. You can hear Danny speak about the importance of emotional mastery at the video here.
